Airconditioner Fault Caused Power Outage
An airconditioner fault on Tuesday, 7 September 2004, caused a power failure to the complete building at which rebel is located.  A diesel generator was installed on Saturday, 11 September, to provide temporary power until the problem can be fully repaired.  As a result of this power outage rebel was unavailable between those dates, and indeed telephone service to Tellurian was similarly unavailable.  We apologise for the inconvenience to you, which obviously was entirely beyond our control.

Hardware Fault Causes Slow Downloads
Downloads from Rebel have been terribly slow for the last few weeks, and we have finally tracked the problem down to a faulty network hub.  The hub has been replaced and performance is now back to normal.  We apologise for any inconvenience cause to you by this problem.

Spam Filtering
Rebel now consults some widely used Email blacklists, and refuses to accept any email from a computer which is listed on any of them.  The lists are maintained as a public service by their various maintainers, and each have different procedures used to decide whether to list a computer, and how to have a computer removed once it has been listed.  In general computers are only listed if they are known to be an open relay or used for sending spam.

The blacklists which rebel consults are:

Neither rebel nor Tellurian is associated with the people and organisation who maintain these lists.

We hope that you notice an improvement through reduced spam in your mailbox.

Web proxy service
Rebel now has a web proxy service for rebel dialin users.  You may find use of the proxy give better download performance and better web browsing speed.  We encourage you to use the proxy and to let us know what you think.  To use the web proxy, under Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  2. Select your dialup connection for rebel and hit the 'Settings...' button.
  3. Tick 'Use a proxy server' and enter the address proxy.rebel.net.au and the port 3128
  4. Press 'Ok' to close the options dialogs

Our fair-share policy now includes reduced speed downloads after the first 63Mbytes in any seven day period.  You can see your current download usage, if you are logged on to a rebel modem, by visiting the Display Download Usage link on our User Services page.

Courier WebMail
We have installed courier webmail, a web based email program so that you can send and read your email using any web based browser.

Internet Filtering
Australian Government legislation requires ISPs to filter banned Internet content, or to provide information on internet filtering software.
